Yves Saint Laurent himself was a man with many descriptions—they called him a genius, the boy wonder, the Pied Piper of all-things fashion—and a scrolling list more. But, without doubt, the couturier Yves Saint Laurent is absolutely one of the greatest designers of the 20th century and has forever changed the fashion industry in so many ways.
Founded in 1961, Yves Saint Laurent revolutionized the way fashion and society merge and interact with each other through the introduction of high-end made clothes produced on a larger scale than the exclusive collections. This revolution has given Yves Saint Laurent influence both inside and outside the fashion industry. It also secured its founder the reputation of touting one of the most prominent fashion houses with a very distinctive identity and strong codes which is a fundamental part of its brand DNA.
Is YSL and Saint Laurent the same?
Saint Laurent has traditionally been known for creating iconic fashion pieces for both the men’s and women’s fashion sector and is one of the top-selling luxury bag-makers in the world. But what is the difference between YSL and Saint Laurent? Is YSL and Saint Laurent the same?
YSL and Saint Laurent both have their own logo variations, but it is the same brand. The difference is the luxury fashion branch of the brand is officially called Saint Laurent Paris. Don’t let popular references confuse you – many still refer to the brand’s products by YSL or Yves Saint Laurent but luxury enthusiasts will let you know that this isn’t correct.
Did YSL change its name to Saint Laurent Paris?
It was quite a surprise to many when iconic fashion brand Yves Saint Laurent announced that it will change its name to “Saint Laurent Paris.” Creative director Hedi Slimane decided to rebrand YSL before even allowing the first collection to hit the runway. Slimane removed the ‘Yves’ from the brand name, creating a logo under the name Saint Laurent Paris.
After much turmoil in the industry, later on in an interview Slimane said, “Historically, Yves decided with Pierre in 1966 to name his revolutionary ready-to-wear “Saint Laurent Rive Gauche.“ Yves wanted a clear dichotomy with his couture, and chose Helvetica font for the new label. It was for him a distinctive sign of modernity, and a drastic change from the Couture label. In the interviews Yves gave for the launch of Saint Laurent Rive Gauche, we can feel his determination to change the format and values of Ready-to-Wear Fashion next to his Haute Couture.”
Continuing, “The retro-branding for the ready to wear meant in reality protecting and preserving the name “Yves Saint Laurent “ for Couture. Rather than “dropping the Yves” the restoration of a spirit of Couture was intended a few years down the line. “Yves Saint Laurent” will be about the ateliers, the tradition,
about complete luxury. It would be back when the House of Couture would be ready for it, and the ateliers “Tailleur and Flou” stronger and reformed.
With the House now completed, the two names exist as they always did historically, next to the monogram designed by the artist Cassandre.”
Although the brand is known as Saint Laurent Paris, the iconic YSL logo can still be found on many luxury handbags, beauty products, and fragrances. This YSL logo keeps the beloved originality of its couture house alive, even as fashion moves fast into the future.
The official Saint Laurent website can still be found at YSL.com, but the official luxury line is and plans to stay simply as Saint Laurent Paris.
Is Louis Vuitton better than Saint Laurent (YSL)?
Saint Laurent competes globally with the most-high-end exclusive luxury brands and occupies one of the top positions. This positions Saint Laurent Paris as a main competitor of Louis Vuitton. Both of these popular brands have different aesthetics so one may suit your personal style more than the other. Louis Vuitton is known for their instantly recognizable, logo mania finish on almost all of its handbags and leather goods like here on the Louis Vuitton Monogram Canvas Galliera PM Bag. Saint Laurent has a slightly more minimalist aesthetic, drawing your attention to the luxurious nature of leather and the exquisite quilting.
The decision comes down to the features you love in your luxury accessories. Both have unique styles that they offer and you’re sure to find one you can’t help but be madly in love with.

and smooth matelassé calfskin leather, also contributing to its slightly dressier look and feel compared to the Gucci Soho Disco.
